MISD Education Foundation-Habitat for Humanity (Battle for the Nines Grant): Teachers Gene Schramme, Steve Abbott, Kristie Cawthorn and Sherry Stewart received a grant for $5,000 from the MISD Education Foundation to fund the cost of transportation and collateral costs for students to participate in Habitat for humanity Mansfield, TX House #3.
From Gene Schramme, "Combining our program with Habitat for Humanity is a win-win. What is taught in theory, through examples and photographs will be applied in the field, with purpose and goals in mind. Real world scenarios and “teachable moments” occur on a construction site regularly, it is difficult to create these in the shop/classroom environment.
Students will be able to share what they’ve learned in class and on the site with others- memories and experiences no textbook or assignment could simulate.
The life-lessons learned through volunteerism are countless. Serving the community through this program provides students with a sense of purpose, but the ability to take friends and family members (years later) past the address of a home they participated in building- well, that’s priceless."
